Application Process

Individuals who are 65 years or older and hold only a Category B driving license can apply for a driving license renewal.

  • Complete the application, which can be accessed above, and submit it to the district commissioner's office.

  • If one or more health questions are answered affirmatively, a medical certificate (and a photo if applicable) must be submitted to the district commissioner's office.

  • If renewing older additional driving entitlements, C-74, CE-76, D-75 or DE-77, a medical certificate must be submitted.

  • Note that the driving license will not be ordered until the medical certificate has been approved.

  • If a new photo is required, the applicant must appear in person and provide a handwriting sample.

  • Applicants who have reached the age of 75 must always submit a medical certificate with their application.

The documents are submitted to the nearest district commissioner's office, which will check whether the conditions for renewing the driving license are met.

Processing and Delivery Procedure

The processing time for driver's licenses is up to 7 working days from when the application is received and the license is ordered.

A driver's license can be delivered in the following ways:

The digital driver's license is updated in the Ísland.is app as soon as the license is ordered. It is possible to request a temporary driving permit on paper, for example if someone is obtaining additional driving entitlements or does not have electronic identification.
