Accompanied driving - Practice driving with a supervisor

Application to become a practice driving supervisor

The process

When the driving instructor has confirmed electronically that the student meets the conditions to start practice driving, he applies for the above with an electronic ID. If the recommended conditions for practice driving are met, the license will be sent to my instructor's pages. The student also receives a notification about the registration. The license must be carried with you during the practice drive.

The student

A minimum of 10 lessons is required before the student is ready for practice driving. The driving instructor confirms when the student is ready.

The driving instructor

The driving instructor shall assess whether and when the student is ready to commence a practice run and confirm this in the student's electronic driving course book, then the instructor may apply to be a supervisor in a practice run by the driving student.

Licences for supervisor

In order to obtain a licence as a training supervisor the person in question must meet the following conditions:

  • Have reached the age of 24.

  • Have a valid licence to drive category B for at least 5 years.

  • Have not been deprived of a licence to drive or punished for deviant driving in the past 12 months.

The practice licence

The exercise licence is issued in the name of the supervisor and student and the licence is sent to both parties on My pages; the licence is valid for up to 18 months, but never for longer than the validity of the study authorization. The licence shall automatically expire when the student has obtained a driving licence. The supervisor must carry the licence during training runs and show it when the police so demand. For training purposes, the supervisor is considered to be the manager of a vehicle. Licences may be withdrawn in special circumstances. The supervisor may not accept remuneration for his/her work.

Car for practice driving

A car used for driving with a supervisor may not exceed 3,500 kg. to the permitted total weight. A trailer/coupling device may be coupled to the vehicle up to 750 kg. The vehicle must be specially identified for training driving according to instructions issued by the Icelandic Transportation Authority. The identification symbol may not be used for other driving. Students learning to drive a manual car may take a training session with the instructor in an automatic car.

The exercise programme

Training runs are an additional exercise with the instructor and are not a substitute for teaching runs with a driving instructor. During a training run, the student practices driving a guided car, which is often a parent or other family member who meets the requirements; the supervisor is considered to be the vehicle's manager. No fee may be charged for guiding in a training run. In other respects, the provisions of Article 68 of the Traffic Act apply to training with a supervisor.

Authorisation of instructors holding an EEA national driving licence

  • Supervisors with a driving licence from an EEA state must attend the sheriff's office with their driving licence.

After a practice run, a few hours of driving instructors take over again in preparation for examinations.

After the accompanied driving, the driving instructor prepares you for the practical test.
