The Ísland.is App

Applying for a passport

You can apply for a new passport for yourself and for children in your custody. In the application, you provide the necessary information, pay the fee, and then only need to attend a photo appointment with the District Commissioner within 30 days in order for the passport to be issued.

The processing time for passports is up to 4 working days from the date of the photo appointment. Delivery time is added for applicants residing outside the capital area.

Passport application

Adults (18 years and older)

  • Begin your application on Ísland.is using electronic ID. If more than 6 months remain on the validity of your current passport, you must apply directly at the District Commissioner’s office.

  • You must attend a photo appointment at the District Commissioner’s office within 30 days and present your previous passport, driving licence or identity card.

  • It is possible to book an appointment with the District Commissioner of Greater Reykjavik. With other District Commissioners, no appointment is required for passport photography.

Children under 18 years of age

If two parties share custody of a child, both must consent to the issuance of the passport.

  1. Guardians can give consent for their child’s passport using electronic ID when the application is completed on the District Commissioners’ website.

  2. One guardian applies and pays for the passport. The other guardian signs in to Ísland.is, selects “applications in progress”, and completes the process by approving the application. Approval must be received within 7 days; otherwise, the application expires and is automatically refunded to the payer.

  3. A child must attend a photo appointment with the District Commissioner within 30 days. It is sufficient for one guardian to accompany a child under 18. The guardian must present identification. If a third party accompanies the child, they must present written authorisation.

If more than 6 months remain on the child’s passport validity, or if one or both guardians do not have electronic ID, written consent from the guardians is required.

  • Form V-901 must be completed.
If both guardians attend the photo appointment with the child, the form may be completed at the District Commissioner’s office. Guardians attending the appointment must present identification.

  • If one guardian cannot attend, they must complete the form in the presence of two witnesses. The other guardian brings the completed form to the District Commissioner.

  • Guardians may authorise a third party to apply for a passport. In this case, Form V-901 and the accompanying document must be completed and signed by two witnesses.

Delivery and processing time

The processing time for passports is up to 4 working days from the date the applicant attends the photo appointment. Delivery time is added for applicants living outside the capital area.

Passports may be collected in four ways:

  1. Collection at Hagkaup, Skeifunni 15, 108 Reykjavík (open 24 hours)

    • The applicant must collect the passport within 7 days of its arrival.

    • The previous passport must be expired or invalidated by the District Commissioner before a new one can be collected at Hagkaup.

    • Passports cannot be collected by proxy at Hagkaup.

  2. Collection at the application site at District Commissioners’ offices nationwide during opening hours.

  3. Collection at the National Registry, Borgartún 21, 105 Reykjavík (opening hours: 10:00–15:00 on working days).

  4. Collection abroad at an embassy or by an Icelandic consul.

When collecting a child’s passport, the guardian must present identification. Children do not need to be present. If a third party collects the passport on behalf of a child, they must present written authorisation and identification.

If someone other than the applicant collects an adult’s passport, they must present identification and a letter of authorisation from the passport holder, regardless of marital status or relationship.
