Please note, in order to apply online, you must have an electronic ID, when applying for a child, both guardians must have an electronic ID to complete the process. The process must be completed within 7 days.
Do not start the application process for a child if only one custodian has an electronic ID.


You can only apply online if you have less than 6 months left on your passport. In other cases, you have to go directly to district commisioners office.

On My pages and App you can see information about your passport and the children under 18 in your custody.

Passports are the safest travel documents and must be carried abroad.

  • An expired passport is always an invalid passport.

  • You cannot extend an expired passport - a new application is required.

  • If you are leaving the EEA, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned return.

  • Passports are the only personal documents accepted abroad

Passport processing

Passports are applied for at disctrict commissioners office. Passports are produced for up to 6 working days (not including the date of application) from the date of receipt of the application. The delivery time shall be added to the delivery time of passports for collection in the open.

Icelanders who are abroad and need a passport to turn to embassy or consulate

Passports can be delivered in three ways:

  • Accessed the National Registry processing, Borgartún 21, 105 Reykjavík. Opening hours range from 10-15 every working day.

  • A nationwide application

  • at an embassy or consular post.

Applications must be made in person and a photo identification card, driver's license or ID card produced if an older passport is lost.

Photography is done at passport checkpoints. A digital image may be produced if the conditions set.

Passport general handling costs:

  • 18–66 years old ISK 14 000.

  • Children, the elderly, disabled - ISK 6000.

Speedy payment:

  • 18–66 years old ISK 28,000.

  • Children, the elderly, disabled – ISK 12,000.

Book an appointment with the District Commissioner in the capitol region for an application for a passport

You can make an appointment at the district commissioners in the capital region, there is no need to make an appointment with other disctrict commissioners office.
