Public procurement refers to the purchase of goods, services and works by the state, municipalities and other public entities. The objective of public procurement is to ensure the efficient use of public funds, promote effective competition and provide companies with equal access to business opportunities with the public sector. Public procurement is also based on the principles of transparency, equal treatment and proportionality in order to strengthen trust in the use of public funds.

Public procurement is governed by the Icelandic Public Procurement Act.
