Simulation of Spaces for the New SAk Building

Spaces Set Up in Real Size for Testing.
Last week, simulation testing of spaces for the planned new building at Akureyri Hospital (SAk) took place. The tests included a patient room, an en-suite bathroom, a medication room, and a sluice room. The term "simulation" is the Icelandic translation of the English word and is used to describe this method.
The spaces were constructed in actual size using partitions, equipment, and tools in the old library and a former classroom on the 2nd floor. Staff members were invited to participate in the simulation tests, during which they tested workflows and provided feedback. The goal is to ensure the spaces meet the needs of the staff before moving further in the design process.
“For us, it is extremely important to test the facilities as realistically as possible. The opinions of the staff are crucial since they are the ones who will use the spaces the most,” says Gunnar Líndal Sigurðsson, project manager for the new building in the areas of operations and clinical support services.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new building is scheduled for early next year.
