Resilience in the healthcare system is built on compassion and steadfast leadership

30th December 2025

Recently, an interview with the CEO of SAk was published in Healthcare and Life Sciences 2025 – Year in Review. Below is an Icelandic summary of the interview, which is particularly fitting at this milestone as we approach the turn of the year.

Which key factors or developments have had the greatest impact on your part of the healthcare system over the past year?

At Akureyri Hospital, the past year has been shaped by challenges similar to those faced across much of the healthcare sector. Staff shortages, increasingly complex patient groups, and the difficulty of maintaining consistent services within a tight financial framework have all affected operations. As a hospital outside the capital region, we are particularly aware of how delicate the balance is between ensuring access to essential healthcare services and retaining and attracting qualified staff.

How are institutions weighing innovation in artificial intelligence against financial sustainability amid ongoing challenges related to staffing and operations?

It is essential to provide targeted healthcare services. Priority must be given to innovations that reduce workload, improve patient flow, and support staff. At the same time, many of these solutions require additional time and human resources to be implemented properly. The guiding principles behind such investments are simple questions: Does this save time? Does it support staff? Does it reduce costs?

Which leadership-related factors had the greatest impact on performance or transformation during the year?

It has become clearer than ever that stability and strong professional expertise among leaders are critical. Clinical leaders, who carry much of the responsibility for day-to-day operations, need adequate support and the necessary space to lead effectively in order to achieve results. When pressure becomes excessive, it affects both leadership capacity and staff morale, and workload and illness have had a significant impact over the past year.

Which major trends or changes within the healthcare sector do you believe will shape leadership and decision-making in 2026?

Looking ahead to 2026, there will be a continued need to strengthen interdisciplinary teamwork, implement digital solutions that genuinely reduce workload, and place greater emphasis on flexible service delivery. When prioritising the use of financial resources, consideration must be given to staff workload, access to services, and the continued development of care

Which leadership competencies will be key to resilience and growth in the healthcare system in the coming years?

The competency requirements for leaders are clear. There is a need for leaders who listen, communicate openly and honestly, and make difficult decisions while at the same time caring for their people. Resilience is built on teams that trust one another and leaders who combine decisiveness with compassion.
