Junior doctors at SAk lead improvement project – new handbook strengthens induction training
15th September 2025
Two junior doctors, Kristín Erla Kristjánsdóttir and Daníel Andri Karlsson, have recently been working on an improvement project aimed at strengthening induction training and improving access to essential information. The outcome of the project is a new handbook for junior doctors at SAk, which is now available.

The handbook contains practical guidance and information for medical trainees starting work at the hospital. It provides an overview of procedures, daily practices, and the structure of key departments. It also includes information on emergency phone numbers, shift systems, diagnostic tests, air ambulance services, registration processes, and communication flows within the hospital, to name a few.
“We hope the handbook will be useful to junior doctors as they begin their work, as well as in their daily practice,” say Kristín Erla and Daníel
The handbook is an example of an improvement project that can have a direct impact on the quality of services. Akureyri Hospital places great emphasis on creating a strong learning environment for medical trainees and considers the publication of the handbook an important contribution to this goal.
