In recent years, teaching at Akureyri Hospital has received highly positive feedback from students. They describe an encouraging and educational environment offering a wide range of learning opportunities.

Every year, awards are presented for excellence in clinical teaching at SAk. The results are based on surveys conducted by the Department of Education and Science among students after completing their clinical placements at the hospital.“We at the Department of Education and Science are very pleased to see how positively students speak about the teaching here at the hospital. It is a testament to the great dedication and professionalism shown by the hospital staff in guiding and supporting the healthcare professionals of the future,” says Laufey Hrólfsdóttir, Head of the Department of Education and Science at SAk.This year, two hospital departments received special recognition for outstanding clinical teaching:

  • Internal Medicine Department – for teaching nursing students

  • Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Unit – for teaching medical students and junior doctors

In addition, individual awards were given to staff members who have excelled in clinical teaching:

  • Gunnar Þór Gunnarsson, cardiologist and associate professor at the University of Iceland Faculty of Medicine – for outstanding teaching of medical students

  • María Ásgeirsdóttir, nurse anaesthetist – for outstanding teaching of nursing students

  • Oddný Jóhanna Zoponíasdóttir, healthcare assistant in the Surgical Department – for outstanding teaching of healthcare assistant students
