Info on tree health and flowering requested

It is now summer, and all forms of life are beginning to flourish, including various pests. The Land and Forest Iceland are kindly requesting information from individuals nationwide regarding the presence of pests on trees and other vegetation. Additionally, they are seeking updates on the flowering of tree species and an assessment of the likelihood of successful seed development this autumn.

Slow summer arrival on Tunguheidi

This year, summer is only gradually arriving in Tunguheiði, a heath located in the upper region of Bláskógabyggð. Similar to the rest of Iceland, particularly in the uplands and highlands, the plants are first now slowly beginning to flourish. Although the land reclamation efforts initiated in Tunguheiði in 1997 are mostly complete, designated areas within the region will receive fertiliser application early this summer.

Land use emissions rise, but binding in forests rises

At the Climate Day of the Environment Agency of Iceland, which took place recently, the development of emissions and binding in Iceland was reviewed. It was revealed that in 2022 Iceland’s total emissions increased by almost one percent from the previous year. Emissions due to land use increased by the same number, but it was also revealed that the binding of forest land has increased seventeenfold since 1990. Figures on emissions and sequestration in the land use category are based, among other things, on the extensive work of Land and Forest Iceland's experts.

Saga Gunnarsholts - publishing debut

A comprehensive history of the Gunnarsholt farm in Rangárvellir has been published in a book by Sveinn Runólfsson, a former Director of the Icelandic Soil Conservation Service. To celebrate this occasion, the author and the publishing house Sæmundur are hosting a celebratory event marking the publication in collaboration with Land and Forest Iceland.

Minister Visits Land and Forest

During her visit to the institution last week, Minister of Food and Agriculture Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdóttir engaged in discussions with Land and Forest Iceland representatives regarding three significant challenges: the development of a comprehensive soil map for Iceland, the mapping of agricultural land, and the establishment of a new seedhouse in Vaglaskógur. This seedhouse is crucial for enhancing the production of the larch hybrid known as 'Hrymur'.

Land and Forest Iceland is currently seeking individuals to participate in the monitoring project titled "Landvöktun - lykillinn að betra landi". By participating, individuals will contribute valuable data that will be utilised in the evaluation of Icelandic vegetation and soil resources nationwide.

Icelandic Forest Monitoring Largest Project

Within the realm of research and development at Land and Forest Iceland, one of the primary endeavors is the Icelandic Forest Inventory project. Currently, they are undertaking a novel investigation centered on the ecosystem dynamics of mixed forests, with a particular emphasis on preserving biodiversity.

Regulation on sustainable land use signed

The Minister of Food, Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdóttir, has enacted a regulation on sustainable land use, effective September 1st. The draft regulation was initially presented for consultation in January and has since been revised based on feedback received during the consultation period.

The Great Forest Day Competition

The 20th Anniversary of the Great Forest Day in Hallormsstaðaskógur National Forest will be celebrated this year. To commemorate this special occasion, a contest has been organized to select a feature song for the event. Submissions for the competition will be accepted until May 25th.

Agreement on the Landgræðsluskógar project renewed until 2029

On this day, May 15th, the Minister of Food, Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdóttir, the Chairman of the Icelandic Forestry Association, Jónatan Garðarsson, and the Director of Land and Forest Iceland, Ágúst Sigurðsson, signed an agreement to extend the Landgræðsluskógar project until 2030.
