Mosses in the moor - an exciting Sunday event

On an "Exciting Sunday," October 6 between 14 and 16, Land and Forest Iceland and the Icelandic Museum of Natural History will host an event about moss and moors at the National Museum of Natural History’s exhibition, “The Water in Iceland’s Nature” on the 2nd floor of Perlan in Reykjavík.

Land and forest received bronze

In the recently concluded annual meeting of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority Orkustofnun, held in Hof, Akureyri, several public institutions were acknowledged for their notable achievements in transitioning their fleet of cars to electric. Among these institutions, Land and Forest Iceland achieved the ratio of approximately one-third electric cars in their fleet, which earned the institute the bronze recognition.

A river duck shot up in Vísindavöku

The stall of Land and Forest was packed with people as soon as the Laugardalshöll pavilion opened for visitors to Vísindavöku on Saturday. Children accompanied by their parents were the first guests and both children and adults showed what Land and Forest had to offer. A lot of discussions were created and a lot of questions asked.

Iceland’s oldest tree at Vísindavöku 2024

Land and Forest Iceland will be participating in Rannís's Researcher's Night, "Vísindavaka," which will take place in Laugardalshöll in Reykjavík on Saturday, September 28th. Attendees can explore bugs, tree leaves, and seeds through a microscope, touch different soils, watch drone images of vegetation improvement in the Hekla Forests area, and participate in a prize-winning quiz. Additionally, they can attempt to count the year rings on a slice from the oldest living tree ever found in Iceland, which is approximately 280 years old.

Land and Forest Iceland seeks experienced professionals to contribute to the sustainable management and conservation of Iceland's green resources. Our focus lies on land reclamation, afforestation, and forest preservation, aiming to drive economic, environmental, and social benefits through responsible land use practices. Currently, we are recruiting a highly qualified individual to lead our forest audit team and oversee climate accounting for forest lands.

National collection of birch seeds started in Reykhúsaskógur

The annual campaign for collecting and sowing birch seeds commenced yesterday, coinciding with the Icelandic Nature Day, September 16. The Lions Club Sif in Eyjafjarðarsveit spearheaded a collection drive in the forest of farm Reykhús, Eyjafjarðarsveit, marking the fourth iteration of such an event organised by the club, thereby contributing to the campaign's overall objectives. Following the collection activity, the seed collectors were graciously hosted at the Hælið Museum Café in Kristnes, which commemorated the occasion by extending its operating hours beyond the usual schedule.

A job title that's been around for more than 400 years

A group of forestry students from the Swedish Agricultural University of Umeå, currently in their second year of studies, have recently embarked on a visit to Iceland. Their primary objective is to gain insights into Icelandic forests and forestry practices. The curriculum of their studies encompasses a comprehensive range of forestry-related subjects, including processing and forest care. Upon successful completion of their studies, these students will be conferred with the traditional degree of Jägermästare, which is equivalent to the forester's degree in Iceland.

Birch seed collection campaign about to start

The annual birch seed collection campaign of Land and Forest Iceland starts Monday 16 September on the Icelandic Nature Day in cooperation with the Forestry Movement and other organisations and private companies. The first event will be organised by the Lions Club Sif in Reykhús Forest which lies in the Eyjafjarðarsveit Community, about 10 kilometres south of Akureyri. The event starts at seventeen pm in cooperation with the Forestry Association of Eyjafjörður and the forest owners in Reykhús.

Attacking the erosion

The strategic distribution of hay and other organic matter has proven effective in mitigating soil erosion and facilitating the restoration of vegetation. A notable instance of this success can be observed at the Heiðarás farm in the Thingvellir region, which has received financial support from Land and Forest Iceland for its reforestation efforts.

Tartu Declaration on the EU Nature Restoration Law

The Tartu Declaration SERE2024, issued at the 14th European Conference on Ecological Restoration, emphasises the urgent need to effectively implement the EU Nature Restoration Law, which came into force on August 18, 2024. It highlighted the critical role of nature restoration in addressing the climate and biodiversity crises, recognising NRL as a cornerstone for ensuring the well-being of future generations of Europeans.
