In collaboration with the IÐAN educational center, the FSU School of Horticulture will be offering a refresher course on February 17-18. This course is designed for horticulture professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in tree and shrub pruning, review existing methodologies, and acquire new techniques. The registration deadline for this program is February 11.
This course offers a comprehensive exploration of both theoretical principles and practical applications. It will cover various methods for pruning trees and shrubs, encompassing both newly planted and established specimens. Furthermore, the course will delve into the physiological functions of trees and differentiate between their health status in natural versus urban settings. We will examine how vegetation responds to stimuli such as pruning and explore strategies to minimise potential damage during the pruning process. The curriculum includes detailed discussions on tree pruning techniques and methodologies for assessing the condition of tree vegetation. A key focus will be on evaluating tree health prior to pruning to determine the most appropriate intervention for each individual specimen. We will also address the optimal timing for pruning and situations where pruning should be avoided. Additionally, the course will review specific pruning requirements for diverse species, including ornamental roses, climbing plants, and groundcovers. Practical exercises will be conducted to enhance skills in tree assessment and pruning, complemented by a brief overview of essential tool maintenance. Participants are required to bring their own tools and appropriate work attire for the practical sessions, considering prevailing weather conditions.
