Management of agent prices
An agent price is the agent's discounted price for a medicine. If the agent price is lower than the approved maximum wholesale price, it is used as the pharmacies' purchase price. Agent prices are published in the Medicine Price Catalogue; see the explanatory notes to the Medicine Price Catalogue for where in the catalogue.
Pharmaceutical companies and agents are responsible for ensuring that correct agent price information is registered for the medicine and pack concerned. Changes to agent prices are registered in the Pricing access system of the Icelandic Medicines Agency (IMA), where a change of reference currency can also be requested.
Changes to be published in the following month's Medicine Price Catalogue must be received between the 1st and 10th of each month.
Access to the system is applied for in writing via Contact us at IMA. The email address, name and telephone number must be entered there. In addition, it is important to state the name of the company in the "skilaboð" (message) field. To ensure that the request reaches the right place, it is important to enter „Ósk um aðgang að kerfi fyrir umboðsmannaverð“ (Request for access to the agent price system) in the subject line and to select „Verð- og greiðsluþátttaka“ (Pricing and reimbursement) from the subject list.
Laws and Regulations
The pricing of medicines, including the registration of a selling price lower than the approved maximum price, is governed by the Medicinal Products Act, No. 100/2020. Under the Act, wholesalers and marketing authorisation holders that wish to sell prescription-only medicines at a price lower than the maximum price shall notify IMA of that price. The reduced price is published in the next edition of the Medicine Price Catalogue.
More detailed rules on the pricing of medicines, the setting of maximum prices and the publication of information in the Medicine Price Catalogue can be found in Regulation No. 1414/2020 on the pricing of medicines and reimbursement of medicines.
