Icelandic Medicines Agency

Information for representatives and wholesalers

New exemption medicines are published in the medicinal products price list on the 1st of each month.

Importers of new unlicensed medicines should apply for pricing and inclusion in the price list as soon as the decision to import has been made. Pricing applications for unlicensed medicines must reach the Icelandic Medicines Agency (IMA) no later than four workdays before the price list takes effect.

In the event of a medicine shortage, every effort is made to process pricing applications promptly. If a new exemption medicine needs to be prescribed and dispensed before publication on the 1st of the month, wholesalers may inform their customers, Icelandic Health Insurance and the Directorate of Health of the approved maximum wholesale and retail prices, product number, labelling and other necessary information.

In emergencies, where there is an urgent need to use an exemption medicine that is ready for distribution from a warehouse in Iceland but has not yet been included in the medicinal products price list, doctors at healthcare institutions and practices authorised to purchase medicines may use the option available through My pages.
