HERCA Meeting: Training of healthcare professionals working with virtual reality vision devices
1st October 2024
Heads of the European Radiological Protection Competent Authorities (HERCA) is working to identify common issues and propose practical solutions for these issues. The objective is to promote good radiation protection throughout Europe. See more information about HERCA at www.herca.org.
The HERCA Working Group on Medical Radiation is a forum for sharing experiences and what is happening in each country. The Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority recently participated electronically in HERCA's regular meeting on the medical use of radiation.
At the meeting, it was stated, among other things, that the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS) has created a virtual reality program that can be used to learn about radiation protection around fluoroscopy equipment. In the virtual reality, the user is in a angioplasty room and can see how changes in radiation beam direction, the position of the workers, radiation shield and equipment settings affect the radiation doses of the workers and patients in the room. In the virtual reality, X-ray radiation is made visible, which gives the user a unique opportunity to get a sense of the radiation in the room.
The program is free for everyone and can be used in English or German. See more about the program in GR's educational material in the article virtual reality training for healthcare professionals working with fluoroscopy equipment .
Healthcare professionals are encouraged to try the program and train themselves without exposure to radiation.
