Diarrhea - vomiting

Donor eligibility

It is important to ask about the cause of the illness and assess eligibility for blood donation based on that. Check medication, see list of medication

  • If diarrhea / vomiting is caused by an infection (f.ex. stomach flu): Can donate blood 2 weeks after recovery. Decision made with blood recipient safety in mind.

  • If diarrhea / vomiting is caused by other than infection (f.ex. food intolerance, IBS): Deferral period for blood donation is 48 hours. Decision made with donor safety in mind.

Exceptions and comments

Exception:

  • If the diarrhea / vomiting is caused by a serious bacterial infection (e.g. Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, Noro) can donate blood after 12 weeks (3 months).

  • Not eligible for blood donation if diarrhea is chronic or associated with inflammatory bowel disease.
