Joint replacement surgery

24th July 2023

At the end of March, Iceland Health made agreements on joint replacement surgery with Handlæknastöðina (Cosan) and Klíníkina.

The contracts will be valid for the remainder of this year and will apply to those who have been waiting for knee or hip replacement operations for nine months or more. The contribution of Iceland health is insured in accordance with the Regulation on the contribution of health insured persons to the cost of health services.

To inform the contracts, Iceland Health and the Directorate of Health decided to use Heilsuvera, but a post/message has been sent to nearly 900 people. In Heilsuvera, it is an opportunity to answer questions about whether the individual wants to use the resource and if so where. The clinics are then informed of those who have chosen to consult them. People can still log on to Heilsuvera with electronic identification and select Questionnaire in the dropdown window.

Only 247 people have responded to the survey in Heilsuvera. Of those who have responded, 83 accepted the invitation to take action with the contracting parties, 66 chose to remain on the waiting list of the organization they were already on, 76 had already undergone surgery and 22 were scheduled to undergo joint replacement surgery with either Contracting Party, see figure below for further details.

Those on the waiting list for joint replacement surgery who meet the conditions of the contract are encouraged to make an appointment as soon as possible with the companies listed above or to answer the questions at Heilsuveru.
