Pele’s hair

16th July 2025

Pele’s hair are extremely thin glass needles that form during volcanic eruptions when lava is ejected from a vent. These are droplets of molten lava that, due to the speed at which the material is thrown from the eruption site, are stretched into glassy threads. The hairs are very light and can travel long distances, depending on weather conditions.

If Pele’s hair comes into contact with the skin, it is best to blow or rinse it off, as it can cause discomfort if it pierces the skin like a splinter. Handling Pele’s hair or stepping on it may lead to irritation and pain.

People are advised to ensure that children do not put Pele’s hair in their mouths, as it could pose a choking hazard. It is also recommended to avoid going barefoot outdoors.
