• Municipalities publicly present a description of the planning project at the beginning of the planning process, indicating how the environmental assessment of the proposed plan will be conducted.

• This gives the public an opportunity to familiarise themselves with and influence how the environmental assessment will be carried out.

Other plans:

• There is no legal requirement to present an environmental assessment scoping document for other plans to the public. However, in many cases, this is nonetheless done.

• This gives the public an opportunity to familiarise themselves with and influence the approach taken to the environmental assessment. Effective public consultation from the earliest stages can also provide valuable input for the planning process.

The presentation of and public consultation on the environmental assessment process varies depending on the circumstances of each case, in accordance with the scoping document prepared for the relevant plan.

Once the final proposal for a plan and its environmental assessment is available, the plan proponent is responsible for presenting both the proposal and the assessment to the public.

The environmental assessment of a development plan is published along with the planning documents on Skipulagsgátt, planning portal. The public must be given a six-week period to review the proposal and its environmental assessment and to submit comments through the portal.

In the final decision-making process, any comments received on the plan proposal and its environmental assessment must be taken into consideration.
