FSRE oversees state-owned lands and natural resources on behalf of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. FSRE is responsible, among other things, for:

• Abandoned state-owned farms and agricultural lands

• Land parcels managed by the Soil Conservation Service and the Icelandic Forest Service

• Properties of the Agricultural University of Iceland and Hólar University

At the turn of the year 2020/2021, a total of 434 lands were registered as owned by the state treasury; 301 of them were under the management of FSRE. State-owned natural resources — such as hydropower, geothermal energy, freshwater, and minerals — also fall under FSRE’s remit.
