FSRE oversees state-owned lands and natural resources on behalf of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. FSRE is responsible, among other things, for:
Abandoned state-owned farms and agricultural lands
Land parcels managed by the Soil Conservation Service and the Icelandic Forest Service
Properties of the Agricultural University of Iceland and Hólar University
At the turn of the year 2020/2021, a total of 434 lands were registered as owned by the state treasury; 301 of them were under the management of FSRE. State-owned natural resources — such as hydropower, geothermal energy, freshwater, and minerals — also fall under FSRE’s remit.
