Temporary delays in the delivery of new driving licences
11th September 2026
The National Police Commissioner of Iceland is preparing for the production of a new version of the driving licence, featuring updated and enhanced security features, while also transitioning to a new manufacturer.

This has resulted in temporary delays in the delivery of production materials. In the meantime, the production of driving licences will be prioritised according to urgency.
District Commissioners’ staff are working hard to minimise the impact of these delays on individuals. Every effort is being made to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, and the new driving licences are expected to become available in November.
Digital driving licence
A digital driving licence can be accessed through the Ísland.is app. Download the app to your mobile device, sign in using electronic identification and select your driving licence under “My licences”. The digital driving licence will become available in the app once your application has been processed.
Temporary driving permit
Individuals who require confirmation of their driving entitlement while awaiting their plastic driving licence can obtain a printed temporary driving permit from a District Commissioner.
Please note
Digital driving licences and temporary driving permits are valid only in Iceland and do not replace a plastic driving licence when travelling abroad.
Thank you for your understanding and patience while we work to resolve the situation.
