New Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Software Development
17th April 2026
Digital Iceland has published new guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence in software development. The aim of the guidelines is to support the responsible, secure, and effective use of AI in development work and to ensure the quality of the solutions being developed.

AI tools have, in a short time, become an important part of development teams’ toolkits and can increase both speed and efficiency. At the same time, however, this development brings new challenges, including those related to data handling, security, traceability, and code quality. The guidelines address these aspects and establish a clear framework for how AI should be applied in the development process. The guidelines cover, among other things:
responsible use of AI in day-to-day development work
data handling and protection
requirements for review, testing, and quality assurance
transparency and documentation of AI usage in development
The guidelines are intended as a living framework that evolves in step with technology and experience, with a focus on the responsible and purposeful use of the latest technology to foster innovation and improve services.
Digital Iceland encourages everyone involved in software development to familiarize themselves with the guidelines and apply them in their daily work. Feedback and suggestions for improvements are actively welcomed, as the guidelines will be under continuous review.
Further information and the guidelines themselves can be found here.
