Loftbrú - project story

1st July 2020

The project Loftbrú is a collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and the Municipality of Iceland and the Icelandic Road Administration.

Regions that fall under Loftbrú

About the project:

Loftbrú will provide a 40% discount on the total fare for all scheduled routes domestically to and from the capital region for users within a defined distance of the capital. Full discount is granted whether you choose a discounted fare or a full fare. Each individual may receive a lower fare for up to three trips to and from Reykjavík each year (six flights). Throughout 2020, discounts required for one trip to and from Reykjavík will apply.

Challenge:

The main challenge of the project was to coordinate the work of the Ísland.is team and airlines, but web services had to be devised for airlines to call for information for booking discounts. The time taken was very short and therefore technical development was carried out alongside analysis and terms of use. Data protection has to be met, but the project uses a published individual code which users of Iceland.is use on an airline booking machine.

Benefits:

The benefit of this project is to implement a government plan to support those who don't live in the capital and its surroundings to fly to and from the capital area 3 times a year.
