Digital Iceland Expands

28th October 2026

Digital Iceland will become a ministerial agency at the turn of the year and take on an expanded role in the fields of digital services, information technology (IT), data and artificial intelligence. The change marks a new chapter in the development of public services.

In recent years, Digital Iceland, in close cooperation with agencies and companies, has laid the foundations for a new approach to public services. Ísland.is has grown and developed, an ever-increasing number of service categories are accessible in one place, and shared digital infrastructure has created new opportunities for the public and the public sector.

The results have shown how much can be achieved when the public and private sectors join forces with a clear vision behind them.

Now it is time for the next chapter

From 1 January 2027, Digital Iceland will take on an expanded role and gain even more opportunities to make public services simpler, more accessible and more efficient.

This will give us a stronger foundation to continue simplifying people's lives. At the same time, new projects and greater accountability will be added in the fields of information technology, data and artificial intelligence.

The goal is clear: to make better use of technology for the benefit of people and businesses, to simplify the public's interactions with the public sector and to promote more cost-effective and efficient operations.

Continued cooperation with public entities and the market

From the outset, the success of Digital Iceland has been built on strong cooperation. That cooperation will be no less important under the new structure. By pooling resources, knowledge and technology, we can reduce duplication of effort, make better use of public funds and create more room for innovation.

The future is digital

There are many projects ahead. The opportunities offered by better use of technology, artificial intelligence and the continued development of digital services are considerable.

We are proud of what has been achieved, grateful to the many partners who have joined us on this journey and full of anticipation for what lies ahead.
