New survey results from the Directorate of Health indicate that three out of four adults meet the official recommendations for physical activity – at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week. However, certain groups, particularly those facing financial hardship, find it more challenging to incorporate regular physical activity into their daily routines.

For the first time, the national guidelines also include specific recommendations to reduce sedentary behaviour. Prolonged sitting is associated with negative health outcomes, and the data show that many individuals, particularly younger adults and those living in the capital area, spend a significant portion of their day seated.

The Directorate encourages everyone to take advantage of daily opportunities for movement and to break up long periods of sitting, for instance, by walking or cycling part of the way to work or school. The Bike to Work initiative, launching on May 7, is a great way to kick-start healthier habits in a fun and motivating environment.
