Successful conference dedicated to maritime surveillance

A comprehensive and ambitious international conference took place in Harpa from 19th to 23rd of May. The conference, called the International Fisheries Observer and Monitoring Conference (IFOMC), is the only conference in the world dedicated to maritime surveillance.

The conference, which was the eleventh in a row, was held in a Nordic country for the first time. The Directorate of Fisheries has been at the forefront of organizing the conference for the past 2 years, along with a good group of international organizing committee members from the United States, Canada, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Portugal and Iceland.

11 seminars were held with a total of over 80 talks, as well as two workshops. One workshop was held on Landsbjörg's accident prevention vessel, Sæbjörg, and dealt with safety at sea, the other was on electronic surveillance. There were also over 50 posters on display where various parties presented their research. The conference had over 200 participants that came from 35 countries.

The Directorate of Fisheries staff is extremely pleased with the conference, where the latest research and technology in maritime surveillance were presented and international cooperation was strengthened.

The next IFOMC conference is planned to be held in Chile in early 2028.
