Sigurður Þórarinsson appointed Director of Digital Health

Minister of Health Alma D. Möller has appointed Sigurður Þórarinsson, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Landspítali, to the position of Director of Digital Health – a development and service center that begins operations on January 1, 2026.

Minister of Health Alma D. Möller has appointed Sigurður Þórarinsson, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Landspítali, to the position of Director of Digital Health—a development and service center that begins operations on January 1, 2026.

Digital Health will be a central development and service hub for the entire healthcare system, operated as part of the Ministry of Health based on Article 17 of the Act on the Government Offices of Iceland. It will consolidate projects that were previously dispersed, such as those at Landspítali, the Directorate of Health, the Development Center for Icelandic Healthcare Services, and the Ministry itself.

The new unit will also emphasize digital innovation, including communication and support for market participants. Developing digital solutions for healthcare in a centralized unit enables the construction of coordinated digital infrastructure that benefits the entire healthcare system. Focus will be placed on the healthcare system as a whole and the secure recording, preservation, and transfer of health information between service levels and providers.

"This is very important for both providers and users of healthcare services and promotes continuous, safe service without unnecessary barriers. It is a major task that awaits Sigurður; to shape and develop the projects of Digital Health in consultation with stakeholders and to build a strong and cohesive team of staff to implement them. I have full confidence in him for the task, and he will certainly not be alone, as many experienced professionals who have worked on digital matters in the healthcare system will follow their projects and begin work at Digital Health in the new year," says Minister of Health Alma D. Möller.

Sigurður Þórarinsson completed a B.Sc. in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iceland in 1991 and an M.S.E. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, in 1996. He has extensive professional experience in technical solutions in Iceland and the United States, having worked in software development and innovation, IT system operations and outsourcing, as well as security and quality management.

For the past four years, Sigurður has worked in the development division of Landspítali. There, he has led organizational changes in the hospital's IT department, managed teams through transition processes, built network and operational security, and been involved in numerous implementation projects. For the last two years, Sigurður has served as Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, a role in which he initiated a new innovation training program for clinical staff in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer of Graduate Medical Education at Landspítali.

Before joining Landspítali, Sigurður worked for software development and innovation companies in the private market, serving as Managing Director of Development at Tempo ehf. for five years, and previously in software development at Sabre Airline Solutions for many years.

In assessing candidates and deciding on Sigurður's appointment, the Minister relied, among other things, on the opinion of an advisory competency committee appointed in accordance with Article 39(b) of the Act on the Rights and Obligations of Government Employees.
