RSV cases continue to rise, with 12 cases reported in week 45, over half of whom were aged 2 or younger. Five people were in hospital with RSV at the National University Hospital, including four children aged 2 or younger.

Influenza cases decreased slightly, with five cases reported in week 45, most of whom were diagnosed with influenza A(H3). Most of those diagnosed were aged 15-64. One person was in hospital with influenza.

COVID-19 cases have also decreased, with eight cases reported in week 45, most of whom were aged 65 or older. Four people were in hospital with COVID-19.

Around half of those diagnosed with respiratory infections (other than COVID-19, influenza, or RSV) were diagnosed with rhinovirus (common cold). The number of respiratory samples tested has remained stable in recent weeks, with the proportion of positive samples gradually increasing through the fall, reaching over 32% in week 45.

Situation in Europe

Influenza and RSV cases remain low in EU/EEA countries, but RSV cases are expected to increase in the coming weeks. COVID-19 cases are also low compared to summer levels, with individuals aged 65 and older continuing to face the highest risk of severe illness. For more details, visit the website of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

Prevention

Vaccination remains the most effective protection against severe illness from respiratory viral infections. Autumn vaccination campaigns have started, and older individuals and other high-risk groups are encouraged to vaccinate. General preventive measures are also advised; see more information on the Directorate of Health’s website.
