Numerical results of the 2026 assessment for individuals

Iceland Revenue and Customs has completed the 2026 assessment of public charges for individuals, based on income earned in 2025. Income tax and municipal tax have largely already been collected through withholding tax, but the assessment provides the final settlement of these taxes.

In addition, the following charges are assessed, broadcasting fee, elder care construction fund fee, accident insurance fee for household work, social security contribution for individuals operating a business in their own name. Child benefits and interest subsidy are also determined during the assessment.

On 1 June, refunds resulting from the assessment will be paid into the bank accounts of taxpayers who have a credit balance with the Treasury.

Number of taxpayers and estimated assessments

The number of taxpayers on the tax register continues to increase. This year, the register included 359,948 individuals, which is 5,772 more than the previous year, an increase of 1.63%. Taxes for 25,021 individuals were estimated, representing approximately 6.95% of all individuals on the register. This proportion is slightly lower than last year, when estimated assessments applied to 7.34% of taxpayers.

Electronic tax returns

Iceland Revenue and Customs has continuously worked to improve services for taxpayers. Filing tax returns has become significantly easier for most individuals, as returns are now largely processed electronically and communication with taxpayers mainly takes place online.

Improved data reporting and taxpayer assistance have reduced errors and simplified the filing process for most people. Traditional paper tax returns are now largely obsolete, and 99.74% of taxpayers submitted their tax returns electronically this year.

Publication of the assessment register and appeal deadline

The assessment register for individuals will be published on Monday, 17 August, and will remain available for 15 days, until 31 August.

The deadline to appeal the assessment is 31 August.
