Kilometer fee: Deadline to register mileage is 1 April

If you have not yet registered your vehicle’s mileage this year, you must do so to avoid a late registration fee. Those who have already registered this year or have a valid registration from 2025 do not need to take any action.

Registering mileage

Under the Act on the kilometer fee, No. 100/2025, vehicle owners must register the odometer reading once a year, regardless of the vehicle’s energy source, and pay a kilometer fee for each kilometre driven.

If the mileage has not been registered by 1 April 2026:

  • The vehicle must be taken to an authorised inspection station for a mileage reading

  • A 20,000 ISK late registration fee will be applied

Fee cancelled if registered before 1 May

It is important to register the mileage no later than 1 April 2026 for vehicles that have not been registered in 2025 or so far this year, in order to avoid the fee.

After 1 April 2026, the mileage must be recorded at an authorised inspection station. If this is done before 1 May 2026, the fee will be cancelled.

Mileage can be registered on My Pages on Ísland.is or at an authorised inspection station. It is also possible to use the Ísland.is app or the N1 app.
