GIS / Geospatial Information Specialist

Land and Forest Iceland is seeking a skilled and motivated specialist to join its Geospatial Information Team. We are looking for an individual with a strong interest in geospatial information, data processing, and the development of digital solutions that support a wide range of operational and monitoring projects across Iceland. Application deadline is 22 June.

Applications must be submitted through Starfatorg.

The position is part of the Operations, Finance and Digital Development Division, where the Geospatial Information Team plays a key role in the development, operation, and dissemination of geospatial information within the organisation. This is a diverse and engaging role involving the development and maintenance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the design of data collection workflows, data analysis, and support for projects related to forestry, land restoration, and other activities under the responsibility of Land and Forest Iceland.

Geospatial information plays an increasingly important role in the organisation’s work and forms the foundation for the registration, monitoring, analysis, and communication of information on Iceland’s land and vegetation resources. These data support both day-to-day operations and national-level planning and decision-making. The position offers an opportunity to contribute to the continued development of digital solutions that have a tangible impact on the organisation’s projects and the effective use of critical environmental information across Iceland.

The position is based in Reykjavík. This is a two-year appointment with the possibility of extension, supporting the continued development and enhancement of geospatial information solutions within Land and Forest Iceland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain GIS solutions that support the work of Land and Forest Iceland.

  • Design and implement solutions for data collection and field data capture.

  • Manage geospatial datasets, data quality, and data workflows.

  • Process, analyse, and present geospatial and other related data.

  • Develop and maintain web maps, dashboards, and other web-based solutions.

  • Coordinate and facilitate the use of geospatial information across the organisation.

  • Provide guidance and support to staff in the use of GIS and related systems.

  • Participate in the development and maintenance of digital solutions for field data collection and monitoring.

  • Collaborate with specialists and project managers on project implementation, monitoring, and reporting.

  • Undertake other tasks as required within the Geospatial Information Team.

The Geospatial Information Team develops and operates digital solutions that support data collection, monitoring, and project implementation throughout Iceland. The role focuses on building GIS systems, developing data collection workflows, processing and analysing data, and making information accessible to staff and stakeholders. The Geospatial Information Team is involved in a wide range of challenging projects related to forestry, land restoration, natural resource monitoring and the digital development of Land and Forest Iceland. The importance of geospatial information within the organisation continues to grow, playing an increasingly important role in data-driven decision-making, project planning and information sharing.

The successful candidate will work closely with specialists across the organisation on the implementation and use of GIS solutions, the deployment of field data collection systems, the coordination of datasets, and the development of new digital workflows. Land and Forest Iceland uses the Esri ArcGIS platform, with ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online serving as core components for data collection, dissemination, and GIS operations.
