Farmed Salmon in Haukadalsá River

The Directorate of Fisheries received news on the afternoon of the 13th of August that farmed salmon might have been caught in Haukadals River.

That night, Jóhannes Sturlaugsson, a fisheries biologist, caught 3 salmon with farm-raised characteristics in the river. Samples from these fish will be taken for genetic analysis to shed light on their origin.

An inspector from the Directorate of Fisheries visited the site yesterday and photographed Haukadals River using a drone. It revealed a large number of fish, especially in the lower areas, which were thought to be farmed fish. Upon closer examination of the footage, it turned out that a large portion of the fish were pink salmon.

Inspectors from the Directorate of Fisheries will use drones to check for farmed salmon in other rivers in the vicinity and also in rivers in the Westfjords today and in the coming days.

The Haukadals River Fishing Association plans to attempt seine fishing in Haukadals River in consultation with the Directorate of Fisheries. Additionally, it is being considered whether to prevent fish from ascending into Haukadals Lake and a tributary of Haukadals River.

It has been decided to bring Norwegian divers to the country to better investigate whether farmed fish can be found in the Haukadals River and to catch them with spear guns if they are found. They are scheduled to arrive in the country on Tuesday, 18th of August, and will be working on Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
