Enjoy yourselves on June 17th
It´s been a beautiful weekend across Iceland. Up next is June 17th – Iceland’s National Day – which will be celebrated across the country with parades, concerts, games, and entertainment for children and adults alike. The police, the Emergency Line (112), and partners are behind the awareness campaign “Enjoy yourselves – Summer 2025”, which emphasizes that summer events – such as June 17th – should be safe, free from violence, and serve as a positive example for all.
Summer offers more time outdoors, more free time, and more opportunities to spend time together. Research shows that children who enjoy more quality time with their parents report better mental well-being (Rannsóknir og greining, 2022).
Let’s make the most of these festive days – and create lasting memories together.
Examples of events around the country:
, the program is diverse. The day begins with a formal ceremony at Austurvöllur at 11:10, where President of Iceland Halla Tómasdóttir will deliver an address. The parade starts at 13:00 from Hallgrímskirkja and proceeds down Skólavörðustígur to the main celebration area in Hljómskálagarður Park. There and in Klambratún Park, there will be concerts, street theater, dance, circus acts, rides, food trucks, and a vintage car show.
In Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Mosfellsbær, and Seltjarnarnes, there will be family-friendly programs with parades, music, bouncy castles, and children’s entertainment.
In Ísafjörður and Selfoss, lively festivities will feature candy showers, horseback riding, and face painting. Ísafjörður will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the local museum, and in Selfoss, seniors will host an evening gathering at Grænumörk.
In Reykjanesbær, the day begins with a festive church service in Keflavík Church at 12:00. A parade to the town park (Skrúðgarðurinn) follows, where cultural and sports groups will take part in a rich celebration program.
In Fjarðabyggð and Hvolsvöllur, the focus will be on culture, history, and togetherness for all age groups.
Further details about National Day events across the country can be found on the websites of local municipalities.
A good celebration is one where everyone enjoys themselves and gets home safe.
Have a great time on June 17th – and remember, 112 is the only emergency number in Iceland.
