Digital Health begins operations

A new centre for development and innovation in healthcare services is now operational.

Today, 2 January 2026, Digital Health, a development and service centre, became operational.

This is a new entity under the Ministry of Health, reporting to the Permanent Secretary.

The role of Digital Health is to coordinate all digital projects in the healthcare service, ensure oversight, and also to support innovation and thereby the involvement of the innovation community. Projects related to innovation within the healthcare system, along with human resources, will be transferred to Digital Health from a number of healthcare institutions.

The initial projects relate to, for example, the infrastructure of medical records, information security, standards, innovation, etc.

To begin with, the projects will concern the infrastructure of medical records, information security, standards and innovation.

The Director of Digital Health is Sigurður Þórarinsson, appointed by the Minister of Health on 2 December 2025.
