Coordinated Preparations for the August 12 Total Eclipse
A steering committee appointed by the Prime Minister earlier this year has been working on coordinating the Icelandic government's preparations for the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026.

A steering committee appointed by the Prime Minister at the beginning of the year has been working on coordinating the Icelandic government's preparations for the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026. On that day, increased strain can be expected on transportation networks, sensitive natural areas, infrastructure, and emergency services in the western part of the country where the total eclipse will be visible.
The role of the steering committee is to gather information, maintain an overview of tasks related to the event, and ensure a coordinated approach and consistent information sharing across ministries, public agencies, and municipalities.
Operating under the leadership of the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police is a consultative forum for key stakeholders, where the current status, risk assessments, and public communication are regularly reviewed.
Despite nationwide coordination, individual municipalities, police districts, and public institutions retain responsibility for their respective jurisdictions, as is customary during other peak periods.
Most residents in the western part of the country enjoy the unique privilege of being able to experience the total eclipse from their homes or immediate surroundings. By choosing a suitable viewing spot near home, everyone can do their part to reduce traffic, thereby contributing to public safety and the protection of sensitive natural areas.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin) and the police have already prepared various traffic management measures, including road closures and traffic restrictions.
The public is urged to monitor official updates on the total eclipse information portal at Island.is and prepare in accordance with guidelines from authorities and emergency responders.
