Cooperation of European Civil Aviation Authorities

Jón Gunnar Jónsson, Director General of the Icelandic Transport Authority, signed yesterday, on behalf of the Icelandic government and the aviation authorities, an updated convention on the Bureau of the European Civil Aviation Conference.

The European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) was established in 1955 by 19 European states, including Iceland, and now has a total of 44 member states. ECAC is headquartered in Paris, and its area of responsibility stretches from Greenland in the west to the Caspian Sea in the east, with Azerbaijan as a member.

ECAC works towards the development of safe, efficient, and sustainable European air transport. To this end, ECAC seeks to harmonise aviation policies and practices among its member states and to foster mutual understanding of policies between member states and those belonging to other civil aviation authorities worldwide.

ECAC’s main priorities are to safeguard the safety of air transport, the efficiency of the industry, and environmental concerns.

On behalf of Iceland, the Icelandic Transport Authority (Samgöngustofa) is a member of ECAC
