Expected new rules on drones

Registering drone operators

New EU rules on the flight of unmanned aircraft (drone) have entered into force in member countries of the Union. These rules have not taken effect in Iceland, but they are expected to be implemented in the next few weeks. Unlike the current Regulation (990/2017) which requires only the registration of commercial drones, drone operators will have to register under the new regulation and certain requirements are made for the training of remote pilots.

  • The owners of drones must register on flydrone.is and pay a registration fee.

  • The registration is valid for 5 years.

  • Online examinations in subcategory A1/A3 will be available free of charge.

  • It will also be possible to take an examination in subcategory A2, which must be conducted on the premises of the Icelandic Transportation Authority or with bodies approved by the agency.

See more information about the European drone regulation on the EASA website.
