Mortage certificate

A mortgage certificate is a document stating what rights or obligations have been declared on a specific property.

Individuals and power of attorney holders of legal entities with electronic identification in Iceland or an Icelandic ID number can send a request for the issue of a mortgage book certificate electronically. You can apply for an electronic ID at Auðkenni.

The mortgage certificate is immediately available in the final step of the application process. The certificate is also sent to applicant´s digital postbox on Ísland.is.

Payment is made by credit card in the application process and the fee is ISK 2,000. Once an application has been completed, invoices and payment receipts are available underneath Finance on Ísland.is My pages.

A mortgage certificate commonly contains information on:

  • Loans owing on the property.

  • Obligations on the property which are registered.

  • Rental contracts.

  • Land leases.

  • Asset swaps.

  • Power of attorney for parties who may sign documents on behalf of the owner.

  • Other matters considered to be important in terms of registration of rights.

Conditions

Anyone can obtain a certificate of mortgage certificate for any property. Photocopies of individual documents of the courts are also available.

They must know the name and fixed number of the asset, the register of vessels, the registration number of the vehicle.
