Land and real estate

Land and property issues can be difficult and extensive. When seeking information about them, it is best to give the most accurate description of what is requested.

If a recent case is involved, it is advisable to consult the official authority that was the subject of the case, e.g. the district commission, the local council, the district commissioner or the district court.

The website has been published with images of selected sources that relate to land and property in one way or another. There are, for example, landmark books, land swap books, real estate maps and maps of lanes.

Landmarks descriptions can be found in landmark books, but also in landmark exchange books and parliamentary documents. The National Archives of Iceland have made digital recipes for preserved landmark books and they are temporarily shared with the National Archives.

When requesting access to property data, it is best to state clearly what is being requested.
