Importing household goods to Iceland

When you move to Iceland, you do not have to pay import duties on furniture, household items or personal belongings.

Conditions for duty-free import

You must meet all of the following conditions:

  • You have lived abroad for at least 12 months before moving to Iceland.

  • You register legal domicile in Iceland.

  • You have owned the items for at least one year before the move.

  • Your household goods arrive in Iceland within 6 months from your move. Customs may extend this deadline to 12 months in special circumstances.

Exception

Items you have owned for less than one year may be imported duty-free up to a certain value:

  • 18 years or older: up to 140,000 ISK

  • Under 18 years: up to 70,000 ISK

Vehicles

Registered and motor vehicles are not considered household goods. You must pay import charges on them.

Bicycles are an exception and are considered household goods.

Items that are not considered household goods

The following items are not considered household goods and are subject to import charges:

  • Equipment and items used for business purposes

  • Fixed items, such as built-in fittings and flooring (for example kitchen units or parquet)

  • Vehicles such as boats and aircraft

  • Trailers and caravans

Items subject to import restrictions

The following items require special permits:

  • Food and beverages

  • Alcohol and tobacco

  • Firearms

  • Medicines

How to import household goods to Iceland

  1. Book transport with a shipping company and contact a customs broker

  2. Submit a customs declaration in cooperation with the broker

  3. Provide the necessary documents to the broker:

    • Bill of lading (from the shipping company)

    • Invoice for transport costs (from the shipping company)

    • Invoices for goods that are subject to import charges

  4. The broker submits the documents to Customs before the shipment arrives.

  5. When the goods arrive in Iceland, they are cleared through customs. The broker will contact you if additional documents are needed.

  6. The broker will notify you once the goods have been cleared and are ready for collection.
