Directorate of Immigration: Complaints, refusals, refusals of entry and expulsions

How do I appeal the refusal of an application for a residence permit?

If your application for a residence permit has been refused, you are given 15 days to appeal the decision to the Immigration and Asylum Appeals Board. The deadline for appealing starts when you receive the Directorate of Immigration's decision.

On the website of the Appeals Board you can find information and instructions: How can I appeal?

The Appeals Board does not require the appeal to be in a particular format. However, the name and appellant’s date of birth should be stated in the appeal as well as an e-mail address and/or phone number so the appellant can be reached while the appeal is being processed by the Board.

The appeal may be sent by email to postur@knu.is or via Signet transfer, it does not need to also be submitted in paper form. There is also an online appeal form on the Board's website.

The following information should be included:

  1. The appellant's full name.

  2. Birth date.

  3. Nationality (and, in some cases, the recipient country).

  4. Relationship between individuals, if an appeal is made for a family.

  5. What kind of decision is being appealed.

For further information on the main reasons for refusal and suspension of implementation visit Refusal of residence permit.
