When Can I Take Parental Leave?

You can start taking parental leave up to one month before the child's expected birth date, and the right to parental leave must be used before the child reaches 24 months of age.

Parental leave can be as short as two weeks (half a month) at a time.

The employer must be notified about taking parental leave 8 weeks before the start of parental leave.

It is not necessary to announce how you want to use all the months you are entitled to, but it must be kept in mind that the division of parental leave into several periods is an agreement with the employer.

You can make a change to previously announced parental leave by sending the form: Changes or new period of maternity/paternity leave arrangement. The form must be signed by you and your employer.

Find out more about maternity leave on the website of the Labor and Employment Agency.
