Administration of Occupational Safety and Health: Construction
What is asbestos and how to deal with it?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was once widely used in construction materials and industry due to its fire resistance, insulating properties, and chemical durability. As a result, it may still be found in older buildings constructed before 1983. Since that time, its use has been banned in Iceland and throughout much of Europe, as it poses serious health risks. It is generally safe for asbestos to remain in buildings, such as in walls or pipes, but there is a health risk involved in demolishing walls or repairing pipes that contain asbestos.
The Administration of Occupational Safety and Health may grant permits for work involving the demolition or maintenance of buildings, machinery, or other equipment containing asbestos. Only individuals with the necessary qualifications and expertise are authorized to carry out such work.
If there is any suspicion that asbestos may be present in a building or machinery, it is essential to consult certified professionals who are licensed to handle it.
The AOSH regularly offers certification courses for those involved in asbestos removal and processes applications for permits to work with asbestos.
