Grants for intellectuals
Each year, the Icelandic Transport Authority grants grants to various research projects related to safety of ships, commercial fishermen, passengers and equipment on board ships as well as projects that focus on the healthful environment of seafarers.
Grants are intended to be granted to individuals and/or associations that propose solutions in this direction. The total amount of the grant is up to a maximum of ISK 2,500,000 each year and is free for all to apply.

A detailed description of the project as a whole as well as a statement of which part of the project the grant will be used in shall also be attached. The deadline for applications 2025 is 15 May.
The objective of the grant is:
Granting grants to projects that contribute to increasing safety for seafarers.
To strengthen international cooperation on such projects.
Grants for the design or construction of prototype equipment and equipment that are likely to improve the safety of seafarers and ships.
Granting grants to specific projects to promote education on safety for seafarers.
The allocation of grants shall take into account the fact that projects will increase the safety of seafarers, including:
Acquisition of knowledge and dissemination that enhances the safety of seafarers.
Research, development and cooperation in this regard.
Development of technologies or tools that are likely to increase safety.
Procedures for granting grants
The amount of money to be allocated is determined in the project budget each year, up to ISK 2.5 m.
Applications are advertised free of charge on the website of the Icelandic Transport Authority and the Ministry of Transport and Local Government in April and the deadline for applications is four weeks from the publication of the advertisement.
Only research and development projects related to safety of seafarers are granted.
The principle of grants shall be that the grant shall never exceed 75 % of the estimated cost of the individual projects.
Applicants shall submit applications to the Icelandic Transport Authority on application forms on the Agency's website and supporting documents. The application shall contain a detailed explanation of the nature and purpose of the project, cost estimates and its financing.
After the application deadline, applications shall be submitted to the Maritime Council, which will consider and process the applications.
Further project reviews may be consulted if necessary.
Applications for a follow-up grant may be made after the necessary documents have been submitted and the need and benefits of a further contribution have been demonstrated.
Payment of grant amounts
Grants shall be paid in three stages, i.e. three equal amounts depending on progress.
The first payment (1/3) of the grant amount is made at the beginning of the work.
A second payment (2/3) is made when the grant recipient assesses that the work is half-finished and sends a memorandum or a mid-term report thereon to the Icelandic Transport Authority before another payment of the grant is made. The Icelandic Transport Authority presents the progress to the Maritime Council.
A third payment (3/3) is made when the beneficiary has submitted a final report on the project and it is reviewed by the Icelandic Transport Authority and approved by the Maritime Council.
Results and final reports of projects that have been granted funding shall be made publicly available.
The conditions for granting grants are:
That there is written confirmation that funding has been completed according to the application.
That there is written confirmation that work has begun.
