Fire insurance value

Request for initial fire insurance value

When a building comes into use or has been registered as complete, the owner receives a notification that a fire insurance value will be made based on available data (design data and the registration of the building). In the notice the owner is given 4 weeks to submit more detailed information on the building so the fire insurance value best reflects its value.

A building may not be taken into use until a safety audit (is. öryggisúttekt) has been carried out by the local building inspector.

Examples of things that may need to be submitted

  • If the quantity of furnishings (permanently fixed cabinets) differs from that shown in drawings.

  • Expensive table top in kitchen.

  • Sun deck.

  • Deck walls / Windbreak.

  • Hot tub.

  • Any kind of more expensive finishings than normal.

The initial fire insurance value is free of charge.

Handling of request

You will be notified of the new fire insurance value by letter to My pages on island.is . The processing time depends on the scope of the request but normally it is 5-10 working days.

Subsequently, your fire insurance will be updated by your insurance company.

Planning fee

The owner must pay a planning fee, 0,3% of the fire insurance value, when a building has been built. This fee is intended for municipalities to cover land planning costs.

In the capital area the planning fee is collected by the Iceland Revenue and Customs, but outside the capital the local District Commissioner (Sýslumaður) will handle the collection.
