Family courses in Icelandic Sign Language
The Centre for Communication provides ÍTM children, their parents/guardians and other close family members with ÍTM teaching for free, as well as giving advice on language acquisition and language development.
Family members of ÍTM children, have a legally protected right to learn Icelandic sign language.
Sign language learning does not depend on referrals from a doctor or institution.
Objectives of family courses
The main objectives of family courses are:
support and strengthen communication within and between families in ÍTM.
that families of ÍTM children can use ÍTM in all areas of communication
connect the families of ÍTM children together
Teaching arrangement
Teaching once a week, for one and a half hours at a time
The courses are free of charge to families
Courses are taught at the Centre for Communication, but in rural areas people can attend classes through teleconferences
The name and age of all participants in the course must be registered
Teaching of family courses
Every Wednesday, the Communication Center offers parents, guardians and other family members of ÍTM children a course in ÍTM, free of charge.
Classes will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Communication Center.
