Correction of the electoral registration
Up to election day, the electoral register may be corrected for example due to death, change of citizenship or registration error.
Anyone can inform that the name or names of some voters are missing from the electoral registration or redundant.
These comments should be sent to the National Register of Iceland.
Rules concerning corrections to the electoral registration
The National Registry of Iceland processes the comments and, if applicable, makes appropriate corrections to the electoral registration.
The electoral register may be corrected if:
The National Registry of Iceland has neglected to register the domicile of a voter in accordance with his/her notification of a transfer
The notification of a new domicile has to be made to the National Registry prior to the reference date of the register of electors, which is 12 o´clock noon 38 days before election day.
the voter is dead
a foreign national has acquired Icelandic citizenship or a voter has lost Icelandic citizenship
a Danish citizen has the right to vote in Iceland in accordance with the Act on the Rights of Danish Citizens in Iceland
an Icelandic citizen who has never been domiciled in Iceland or who has lost the right to vote shall emigrate to Iceland and re-register his/her domicile in Iceland after the reference date of the electoral register
the National Registry of Iceland is aware that an error has been made in registering a voter during the electoral registration process
The National Registry of Iceland shall send the local authorities concerned and the voter in question, as appropriate, a notification of corrections which it shall make on the electoral registration.
Deadline for complaints
A decision by the National Registry of Iceland on corrections to the electoral roll may be appealed to the Election Appeal Committee within 24 hours from the decision. The Election Appeal Committee shall afford the appellant a reasonable time to add further information before making a ruling on the case.
