Notification of citizenship for Nordic citizens

Nordic citizens have different pathways to acquire Icelandic citizenship. If you have lived in Iceland for at least three years, you can submit a notification. For information about notification for Nordic citizens, continue reading this page.

If you are not eligible to submit a notification, you can still apply for Icelandic citizenship through a general application. This process requires that you have lived in Iceland for at least four years. For information about application for Icelandic citizenship read:

Notifications are simpler to handle than general applications and cost less, so we recommend you first check to see if you are eligible to submit a notification.

Requirements

In order for you, as a Nordic citizen, to become an Icelandic citizen through notification, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must have been a citizen of Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden since your birth.

  • You must have reached the age of 18.

  • You must have lived in Iceland for the past three years.

  • You must have not been sentenced to prison or other incarceration in the past three years.

What does it cost

The processing fee is ISK 13.500.

The notification will not be processed until payment has been received.

How to submit a notification

Notifications can only be submitted in paper form.

They can either be sent by regular mail to the Directorate of Immigration or delivered to the drop box in the Directorate’s reception.

Processing Time

Supporting documents

  1. Notification in original form, properly filled out and signed.

  2. Payment receipt.

  3. Copy of passport and all stamped pages.

  4. Certificate of legal registration history. The certificate can be ordered electronically from Registers Iceland, see Certificate of legal registration history.

  5. Certified copy of the original birth certificate. The original must be certified with an apostille or double authentication.

    If the certificate is in a language other than Icelandic, English or a Nordic language, a certified translation must also be submitted.

If you have children under the age of 18

Your children will become Icelandic citizens at the same time as you, if:

  • They are under the age of 18.

  • They have legal residence in Iceland.

  • They are unmarried.

  • You have custody of the child.

Supporting documents for children

  1. Copy of the child's passport and all stamped pages.

  2. Certified copy of the child's original birth certificate. The original must be certified with an apostille or double authentication.

    If the certificate is in a language other than Icelandic, English or a Nordic language, a certified translation must also be submitted.

  3. Custody documents.

    1. If you have sole custody of the child, you must submit documentation as proof. Original documents must be certified with an apostille or double authentication before a certified copy ist made.

      If documents are in a language other than Icelandic, English or a Nordic language, a certified translation must also be submitted.

    2. If both parents share custody, you must submit a signed consent of the other custodial parent and a copy of the parent's passport.

  4. Consent of the child. Applies only if the child is between 12 and 18 years old.

Legislation

Icelandic citizenship is granted to Nordic citizens pursuant to Article 14 B of the Icelandic Nationality Act No. 100/1952.
