Changes in vehicle use

As a registered owner you can request a change of a vehicle's category of use by submitting an application to the Icelandic Transport Authority.

In some cases vehicles may need to be inspected at an inspection station before their registration can be changed.

Common changes of registration that require a modification inspection include:

• registration of towing equipment

• off-road modifications

• registration of a vehicle's category of use:

  • taxi

  • driving instruction

  • motor caravan

• changing a passenger car into a van or truck

• changing number plates from regular number plates to VAT number plates

Change of inspection frequency

A vehicle must have been inspected in the calendar year, irrespective of the vehicle's inspection month, if it is intended to change the category of use to one with a higher inspection frequency.
