Changes in vehicle use category

As a registered owner, you can request a change of a vehicle's category of use by submitting an application to the Icelandic Transport Authority. The application applies to the following use categories:

• general use

• vehicle rental

• vintage vehicle

• island-use vehicle

• agricultural vehicle subject to inspection (e.g., tractors)

In some cases, the vehicle must undergo a regular inspection, a modification inspection, or both before the change in registration can be approved.

Examples of common changes requiring a modification inspection at an inspection station:

• registration of towing equipment

• off-road modifications

• registration of a vehicle's category of use:

  • taxi

  • driving instruction

  • motor caravan

• changing a passenger car into a van or truck

• changing number plates from regular number plates to VAT number plates

Change of inspection frequency

A vehicle must have been inspected in the calendar year, irrespective of the vehicle's inspection month, if it is intended to change the category of use to one with a higher inspection frequency.
