Appeals for visa refusal to Iceland

If the Ministry for Foreign Affairs refuses a visa application, the applicant may appeal the decision to the Visa Appeals Board by sending an appeal to appeals@mfa.is

The appeal of a visa refusal

An appeal against a visa refusal must be submitted within 30 days from the date the applicant was notified of the decision.

The appeal is a written statement of grounds in Icelandic and must include the following:

  • Reference number (the ISL-number located at the top of the refusal letter),

  • Applicant's full name,

  • Nationality,

  • Date of the refusal.

Supporting documents: A proof of payment of the appeal fee.

No other supporting documents need to be submitted, as the Immigration Appeals Board bases its decisions solely on the documentation that was available when the administrative decision was made.

Refusal of a visa application to Iceland by a representing state

If a foreign embassy refuses a visa application on behalf of the Icelandic authorities, the applicant may appeal the decision in accordance with the national laws of the relevant representing state and the instructions provided in the refusal letter.

Appeals against such decisions are therefore not submitted to the Icelandic authorities, but to the state that issued the decision. If a host wishes to appeal the decision on behalf of the applicant, the host must hold a written authorization to do so.
