Appeals procedures for refusal of visas

Refusal by Directorate of Immigration

If the Directorate of Immigration rejects an application for a visa, the applicant may appeal to the Immigration and Asylum Appeals Board, Skúlagata 17, 101 Reykjavik, Iceland, or via email to postur@knu.is. The applicant is requested to specify the reference number, full name, nationality and the date of the Directorate’s decision in the appeal.

An appeal must be lodged within 15 days of receiving the decision. Further information on the procedure to follow can be found on the website of the Appeals Board.

Refusal by foreign embassy/consulate

If a foreign embassy rejects an application for a visa on behalf of Icelandic authorities, the applicant may appeal the decision to the representing state in question, in accordance with instructions in the refusal letter.

If a host wishes to appeal against a decision on behalf of the applicant, he or she must have a written authorization from the applicant.
