The aim of the BA program in Tourism Studies is to educate individuals who actively participate in the development of tourism services, may initiate the establishment of tourism companies, and can undertake managerial roles in this field.
Individuals with a BA degree in Tourism Studies work in all areas of tourism and related fields. Many have developed their own companies and/or business ideas through their studies, which have subsequently become leading companies in the industry. Others work on practical projects as well as policy development and management in both private companies, institutions, and within local governments.
The program emphasizes the philosophy of sustainable development in the construction of tourism services as a profession. Nature, culture, recreation, hospitality, management, and operations are among the focal points of the program, which covers various aspects of the tourism industry. Through the program, students gain a broad perspective on tourism in Iceland and in an international context. Students acquire theoretical knowledge and insight into research alongside the development of practical skills.
Students who complete the BA program in Tourism Studies gain insight into guiding tourists and acquire environmental rights in collaboration with the Environment Agency.
Students can choose to complete the program with a BA thesis, a BA project, or selected courses. The program also serves as preparation for further studies in Tourism Studies.
The program is conducted through distance learning, with students expected to attend sessions two to three times per semester. Otherwise, students can manage their studies within the framework of each course's schedule. Students typically take three courses simultaneously throughout the study period. Four out of five courses within each semester span half a semester (6-7 weeks), while one course extends throughout the entire semester. Projects are usually conducted until summer, and students enroll in autumn. It is possible to pursue the program alongside work commitments.
